From the Commodore:

As 2009 comes crashing down on us, in the form of big white snowflakes, I am reminded that this year has been all about the weather. 2010 is just a glimpse on the horizon and with the speedy passage of time will be here before we know it. My involvement with the club has made this year a busy time for me. Thank you to all of the CYC volunteers, Committees and Board Members. It is thru your efforts that this club survives and flourishes year after year.

See you at the club!
Judy Gordon

JAM: Booma—Skipper: Chuck Gosling Spinnaker: Northern Light—Skipper: Tom & Linda Orlow

Binnacle October – November 2009

November 10, 2009

Whew, that was fast. As quickly as summer never arrived, it was over this week. The Boats were pulled from Northwest Marine and now sit quietly in the parking lot awaiting some TLC. Racers with boats still in the water competed for the final time this season on October 7th. A few boats will remain for the final bow when the hardy choose to be on the water November 15th for the Deer Hunters Alternative. Once again, this fair weather sailor is not unhappy to share these experiences in the clubhouse, rather than on the water!

Labor Day Weekend, though warm and dry, brought light winds for the Red Fox Regatta. Still, 72 boats came out to play and almost 400 gathered in the park in Boyne City to eat, enjoy some Mount Gay Rum and share stories of a summer of boating. Thank you to our Red Fox Committee for another outstanding event.

Thank you to our September and October hosts, Ben & Jennifer Muladore, Jim & Donna Sell, Juli & Dan Fialkowski, Bob & Jan D’Alcorn and Bill & Birute Fleck. The club is open Fridays from 6 pm to 9 pm with a bartender in attendance. Please be sure to indicate your availability to host when returning your renewals. If your availability changes, please
contact Carol Herald at 547-2863.

As the boating season closes, we hope you will join us for our regular Friday Socials or for a Saturday event during the upcoming months. Please be sure to indicate your availability to host when returning your renewals. If your availability changes, please contact Carol Herald at 547-2863.

The club will be closed on the following Fridays, October 30, December 25 and January 1.

See you at the club!
Judy Gordon

Halloween
Party

Saturday, October 31 is Halloween. Join us at the club to revisit Woodstock. Yes, this is a Hippy
Costume Party so dig out those old bell bottoms and tie-dye tee shirts, grab your guitars and come on
down to the club. Games, food and prizes for the best costume. $5.00 donation and cash bar. Sounds like fun.
Watch out for the “Special Brownies” and the “Kool Aid.”

Awards Night

Everyone is invited to attend! Saturday, November 7, 6:00 p.m. social, 7:00 p.m. potluck dinner, with awards immediately following. This is a fun time for skippers and crew to get together, congratulate the competition and pat each other on the back for a job well done. Flags are being made and trophies engraved. Hope to see you there! Anyone having a trophy from last year, needs to return it to the club ASAP.

Once again we will have our Christmas Tree up with gift tags on it. Please select one, purchase
the stated gift, wrap it and place the tag on it and return it to the club no later than the Christmas
Party, December 18th. The gifts will then be distributed to the families. Thank you for your support.
Any questions, please contact Karen Attee at 547-0448.

The Binnacle – August & September 2009

August 28, 2009

The Binnacle
Charlevoix Yacht Club
209 Ferry Avenue PO Box 522 Charlevoix, MI 49720 www.CharlevoixYacht Club. Org 231-547-9170
August/September 2009

From the Commodore:

The Summer Series ended Wednesday night with light air and everyone wondering what happened to our summer. There is still plenty of boating to come with the Charlevoix to Harbor Springs this weekend and the Omena Bay Race on August 29 & 30. The Fall Series begins September 2nd and the Nucore Triangle and Red Fox Regatta on September 4, 5 & 6. I for one am going to stop talking about the weather and just enjoy what is left of the boating season!

June brought some old friends to the Club. The Gleasons were in town for a wedding and it was nice to see Gary & Sharleen mingling with the Friday nighters, just like old times. Their “kids” have sure grown up and although we did not get to see the whole family, it was fun to see Greg and Colleen. A chance sighting of Laurie on Belvedere made me hope we might be seeing more of the Gleasons. Don’t stay away so long next time.

Out on the Big Lake CYC Racers have represented the club well. Windrunner, Padawan II, Bramble and Northern Light sailed to Chicago to participate in the Chicago to Mackinac Race. Windrunner continued on to Port Huron and scored a 4th in his Division in the Bay View to Mackinac. Congratulations to Mark and his crew!

As temperatures cool and a yearning for home cooked meals heightens, I expect some of our cruisers will be heading home. Doug & Kim Simpson were spotted earlier in the North Channel enjoying their Catalina 320, “Sojourn” but should be heading in after a stop at Beaver Island. In their travels, they may have run into, (figuratively of course) Bob & Jan D’Alcorn cruising these Northern Waters on “Wings”. We will look forward to them sharing their adventures with us.

Thank you to our July & August hosts, Karen & Bill Foss, Bill & Barb Doolittle and Tom & Mary Alice Armstrong. If you are available to host, please call Carol Herald at 547-2863. As we head into September and schedules slow down a bit we hope to see more of you at the club on Friday nights. The club is open every Friday at 6pm until 9pm with a bartender in attendance.

See you at the club!

From the Power Fleet—Richard Hodgson II

A power and sail rendezvous on Beaver Island is planned for Saturday, September 12, 2009. Red Fox Regatta
September 4, 5 & 6

The CYC event of the year is staged to begin with the Nucore Triangle on Friday and the Red Fox Regatta on Saturday and Sunday. The race on Saturday, from Charlevoix to Boyne City culminates with a party in the park in Boyne City, which includes music, dancing and a picnic lunch . This event is available for everyone to enjoy but does require you purchase party tickets in advance. The boats race from Boyne City back to Charlevoix on Sunday and meet at the club after the race. Please go to www.charlevoixyachtclub.org for additional information. There is still time for sailors wanting to compete to sign up. Don’t miss this premiere event!

Lake Charlevoix Cup

The Lake Charlevoix Cup is a shared trophy with the Boyne City Yacht Club and the Charlevoix Yacht Club. This very handsome trophy is on display on the mantle in the CYC. To qualify, sailors must compete in 4 out of the 5 races listed; Mark Madness, Pine Lake Regatta, No Boundaries, Red Fox and/or Last Chance Regatta. More information is available at www.charlevoixyachtclub.org.

4th Annual CYC Lake Charlevoix Sunfish Regatta
August 2, 2009
Tom Barnes, Fleet Captain

9 boats registered to race in sunny and breezy conditions following an exhausting day of sailing in the previous day’s Douglas Lake Regatta which left 5 boats with crew too exhausted to sail or with broken equipment. The first race of the day had gusts well over 20 kts and that was enough to claim 3 victims leaving 6 boats to finish. For the first time , the Lake Charlevoix Regatta and Douglas Lake Regatta were combined for overall with Derrick Fries taking first place honors by winning both events. “This two regatta weekend was a special treat, but I have got a lot to learn.”

The CYC Race Committee did a great job and thanks go out to Pam, Abbey and Lexie Barnes and Ali Balter for registration and organization.

Casino Night
September 26, 2009

Plans are now in place for an evening of fun. Games begin at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10.00 each which includes Casino Money and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. You will be able to use your winnings to participate in the Auction which will begin at 10 pm. This is a great chance to practice your gambling skills, without losing the farm! Tickets are available from any Board Member or contacting Jim Sell @231-547-2841.

From the Commodore:

Tune up Race: May 6, 2009 . . . and they are off! Eight boats came out Wednesday evening to tune up their crews and our 2009 on-the-water race committee, Don Bowerman. There was not much wind, and the raindrops chilled and as the sun sort of broke thru, we hoped for a rainbow. It didn’t happen!

Those 8 boats have grown into 19. The Spring Series with five races now completed have been more like a fall series. All involved deserve a special pat on the back. Being a fair weather sailor at this time in my life has never looked so good! Current standings are available at www.charlevoixyachtclub.org .

“Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face.”

Thank you to our May hosts, Jerry and Carol Seymour, Pat Andrews (and Gay Pung), Bob and Beth Uehlein, John and Sharon Laney and Jennifer Richardson. Their efforts kept the club ‘rockin’ and we all enjoyed the Friday camaraderie. Let’s keep it going in June. We need hosts for June 19th. If you are interested call Carol Herald at 547-2863. We also need hosts for July & August. The club is open every Friday at 6pm until 9pm with a bartender in attendance.

We have a new face behind the bar on Fridays. Meet Steve Scully, who will be bartending every Friday in June and
continuing on into the summer. Steve does not know everyone yet, so please help him out by introducing yourself as a member.

Thank you to our Spring Cleanup Crew– Jen Richardson, Todd Olson, Roy and Carol Herald, Bev Hiser, Jerry and Carol Seymour and Julie Kenifeck. The Club looks great! Carol Loring and Carol Herald planted flowers in our window boxes and have been doing their best to shield them from the cool temperatures. Hopefully the thermometer is on its way up.

The Commodore’s Ball was deemed a huge success and those of you who were unable to attend should plan to be there next year. Eighty tickets were purchased and 13 of our Past Commodores were in attendance. Nightblend with Maggie and Jeff Dickson entertained us throughout the evening with a special appearance by the Commodore’s granddaughter, Allie Kessel.

We opened June with a special celebration, for Ken Heininger on his 90th birthday. Many Happy Returns, Ken.

See you at the club!

Going Cruising this Summer?

Post your itinerary on the Bulletin Board at the club to let others who are cruising know where you are planning to be. It’s fun to run into club members who are out there at the same time and share stories before you are off to another location.

Summer Racing

Lake Charlevoix Cup

The Lake Charlevoix Cup is a shared trophy with the Boyne City Yacht Club and the Charlevoix Yacht Club. Information about the Cup and how to qualify is available at www.charlevoixyachtclub.org. The first race in the Five-Race faceoff is June 13, Mark Madness, sponsored by Boyne City Yacht Club. The next race is the Pine Lake Regatta, on June 27th.

Pine Lake Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th. For additional information go to www.charlevoixyachtclub.org. This is a fun race on Lake Charlevoix especially for racers who enjoy the additional challenge of sailing at night.

Competitive Cruisers

Our Race Chairman, Mike Miller has developed a Competitive Cruising Class for sailors who want to get out there on Wednesday evenings but are unsure about full participation in the racing program. He has prepared sailing instructions and more limited courses to allow interested sailors the opportunity to get their ‘racing feet wet’. Practice races are scheduled for June 17th and June 24th. A skippers meeting will be held at the club, June 30th. Watch for more information in your email or go to www.charlevoixyachtclub.org. Come on out and have some fun!

Memorial Race

The first race of the summer series, July 1, marks the 2nd Annual Club Memorial Race. The race format will not change on this evening. But everyone is invited to come out on the water to sail or cruise or just meet back at the club after the race. If you want to join the racers for dinner, please bring a dish to pass. Everyone who wishes will have the opportunity to say something, “to remember.” Mark your calendar and join us as together we remember our boating family members who are no longer with us.

Looking Ahead:

No Boundaries Regatta

The Eighth Annual No Boundaries Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, August 8 on Lake Charlevoix. Race around the CYC buoys to Ironton and back to more CYC buoys. Festivities afterward at the club. For additional information contact Linda Orlow at orlowlg@hotmail.com or go to the CYC website. This is a really fun race. In the past lots of families have participated. Come join us for a Saturday of fun.

Couple’s Race

The Couple’s Race is scheduled for Sunday, August 9 on Lake Charlevoix. Grab a partner and come out and compete around the buoys. More to come at the CYC website.

“Dash to the 45th”

The Elk Rapids Race is scheduled for Saturday, August 15. This is a new race for CYC sailors. Cruisers and power
boaters are invited to rendezvous in Elk Rapids and join together with the racers for fun & food. An invitation has been extended to the BCYC. Racing information will be available at www.charlevoixyachtclub.org .

From the Power Fleet – Richard Hodgson II

Final plans are in the works for a power and sail Rendezvous in Elk Rapids on Saturday, August 15. Sailors will be racing from Charlevoix to Elk Rapids and cruisers can plan to rendezvous with the racers at the Marina in Elk Rapids. In the late afternoon, the Elk Rapids Yacht Club is hosting a Dinghy Poker Run followed by a corn roast. Everyone is invited to
participate for a small donation. Boat slips will be available. The Harbormaster and the Yacht Club would like to know how many boats to expect and how many are interested in the corn roast. So if you plan to be there, please advise via race registration to www.charlevoixyachtclub.org. or cruiser and power boaters may email to rcherald@charter.net

Food will be available at the club after the races and will be provided on a rotational basis by the skippers and their crew. Adjustments to the scheduled rotation may be
necessary depending on the number of boats participating. The club is open on Wednesdays to all members and their guests. Those who wish to eat should bring a dish to pass. Everyone is expected to help clean up.

See you on the water!

March and April Events at CYC

Thank you to our March & April Hosts: Keith and Karen Attee, Bob and Jan D’Alcorn, Cliff and Michelle
Biddick, Dave and Joan Robinson and Roy and Carol Herald.

On May 1, Jerry Seymour will be hosting a “Coffee Event.” Jerry will be mixing up coffees, both Irish and otherwise, to be served in CYC Mugs, for a cost of $5.00. You get to keep the mug.

Rumor has it the coffee was great last year so if you didn’t get a chance to try it, come on down. Jim Stewart is bringing in some of his tasty scones that go perfect with a great cup of coffee. So take a break from boat launch, or after you are done, come warm up at the club.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.

From the Commodore:

Things sure have changed since I last sat in the Commodore’s chair , 16 years ago. The office is user-friendly with a computer and state-of-the-art programs which, with the help of John Friedly and our Past Commodore, I might be able to utilize before summer begins. The Board and our 2009 Committees are hard at work, making sure that the Club continues to provide some entertainment, friendly competition, (both on the water and around the fireplace) and a place to gather with those who share some of the same interests. If you haven’t
already joined us on a Friday night, put it on your agenda and “come on down.” This time of the year, at the club, it almost seems realistic to believe boating season is just around the corner.

If you aren’t already using the Charlevoix Yacht Club Web site to stay up to date on what is happening at the club and around town, please check in with us at www.charlevoixyachtclub.org. You also need to add info@charlevoixyachtclub.org to your email contact list so you can receive CYC email regarding club activities.

Thank you to all of our volunteers both this year and last and to those who have been available to participate in our club activities already this year. I am excited to once again play a part.

See you at the club!

Judy Gordon

January Events at CYC

It was cold outside, but we warmed it up inside with some great chili. Second Friday in January, was game night with Chili on the side. Thank you for everyone’s efforts, we had a great turnout and I will be looking for the recipe for the Chicken and White Bean Chili. Yum.

Anyone interested in setting up a Euchre Tournament for our game night in March?

Many thanks to Jim Stewart and Kate Fox for hosting and helping us celebrate Robert Burns Birthday with traditional Scottish food and dress. For those who are wondering, both Kate and Jim dressed for the occasion in Scottish kilts. Jeremy McBain treated us all to his bagpipes and brought in some items used in Scottish games. The piping was awesome and added to an evening of fun. This is becoming an annual event, so mark your
calendar and join Jim and Kate next year!

It has been a busy month for Board Members. The Board meets monthly at 6:30 on the second Monday. In January, the Board met again on the 26th for the Dutch Treat Changeover Dinner which provides an opportunity to thank our out going Commodore and Board Members, welcome new Board Members and turn over the reins to the new Commodore. Thank you to John Ochs, Doug Simpson, Derek Chowan, Jim Sell and Linda Orlow. We appreciate all the time and assistance you have provided CYC and look forward to your continued support.

And thank you, Lynn, for your tireless efforts on behalf of the club and for offering what seems to be a seamless transition to the new commodore. I appreciate your support and willingness to help where ever it is needed. Thank you for a job well done!

February Events at CYC

Another thank you goes out to all our hosts in February. Jennifer Richardson opened and brought in some
sailing movies and some tasty sloppy joes. It was fun to watch the boats while the snow was blowing outside.

Soup night on the 13th was delicious! If you missed it you missed a real treat. Bill and Birute Fleck showed slides of their trip on the B & B down the inland waterway through Chicago to Fort Myers. It was both informative and entertaining! They say they have more slides of their travels around the tip of Florida and up the eastern coast and we are looking forward to seeing those as well. Thanks B & B!

Marty Jensen warmed up the club with his shrimp jambalaya, hot wings and plenty of friendly
conversation. Thanks, Marty, for hosting and for bringing some old friends into the club!

We had our First Potluck Dinner on the 21st and the food was fantastic. Please join us for the next one so you don’t miss out!

Jim Stewart and Kate Fox will return on the 27th and we’re all looking forward to another fun evening!
